British army technical officers have carried out a controlled explosion on suspicious object  that was discovered near a shop in Co Derry.

Homes and businesses were evacuated after a member of the public found the item in a car park on Kirk Avenue in Magherafelt.

The surrounding area was closed off for the security operation.

Meanwhile, the British army is investigating a suspect on the line outsideNewry, Co Down which caused the suspension of rail services between Dublin and Belfast  yesterday

The security alert came as the Real IRA claimed responsibility for causing four alerts in Derry, causing widespread disruption throughout the city.
