The European Commission has proposed spending €90 million a year to give free fruit and vegetables to schoolchildren across the EU in an effort to combat spiralling rates of childhood obesity. The scheme needs to get the backing of the Council of Ministers and European Parliament but, if all goes to plan, the scheme will be offered to member states later in the year.
