A conference in Dublin today on equality will discuss the measures needed to make the workplace more reflective of society.

The event, marking the completion of the Equal Community Initiative, will examine how agencies like Fás can respond better to the needs of jobseekers facing inequality.

Experts will also look at the barriers employers face when recruiting immigrant workers or people with a disability.

Since 2001, the Equal programme has received €35 million through the European Social Fund to support 43 projects. Its aim is to promote equality and diversity in the labour market.

Tony Tyrrell, coordinator of the Equal Initiative in Ireland, said: "The European Social Fund has played a vital role in promoting policies and best practice to counter inequality in Ireland down through the decades."
