An English company has been fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £6,000 costs after a Belfast man died when a crane jib collapsed. Belfast Magistrates Court heard yesterday that Thomas Magee (36), a charge-hand rigger, from Lakeview Gardens, Newtownabbey, fell 100 feet to his death when the rig collapsed.

Mr Magee, married with two children, was employed by Belfast Harbour Commissioners, which engaged a specialist crane company, Clarke Chapman Ltd, of Newcastle-on-Tyne, to carry out maintenance work at Stormont Wharf.
