NORONI - Troops in the Comoros island of Anjouan detained hundreds of people amid allegations soldiers were torturing detainees in the battle to put down the secessionist rebellion that broke out last week.

Residents yesterday said that more than 200 people, including a former parliamentarian, were arrested after clashes between stone-throwing villagers and armed troops on Anjouan, the largest of the Comoro Islands.
