The EU Commission should block the proposed merger between British Nuclear Fuels Ltd (BNFL) and the German Siemens Engineering group, the Leinster Fianna Fail MEP, Mr Jim Fitzsimons, has said.
Reports suggested the proposed merger would result in a greater concentration of nuclear industries in Britain, he said in a statement. "This is simply not a desirable situation, if one is Irish." He called on the Commission to remember that "under the Euratom Treaty there is a clear responsibility to protect the health and well-being of the general public."
