A second World War era grenade discovered in an old garden shed was today made safe by army bomb disposal experts.
The device was found among debris at an address in Roseberry, Newbridge, Co Kildare.
The Defence Forces said its team was called out by gardaí. “The grenade was removed to a safe location and destroyed,” said a spokesman. “The scene was declared safe at 12.30pm.”
Several War of Independence and other grenades have been recovered in recent years, the majority during renovations in old houses or dredging of canals. A small number of sea mines have also been washed up in Co Wexford.
The Defence Forces said army disposal teams have responded to 162 callouts so far this year, including 43 conventional munitions disposal.
A further 44 viable improvised explosive devices have also been handled.
