Co Cork superdump gets planning permission

Permission has been given for the development of a controversial superdump in Co Cork.

Permission has been given for the development of a controversial superdump in Co Cork.

An Bord Pleanála today granted planning permission to Cork County Council for the use of 250 acres as a landfill site at Bottlehill, near Mallow.

The €56 million development was the subject of two oral hearings after fierce local resistance.

Today the board granted permission for the site saying it was is in line with national and local waste-management strategy and would not have "an unacceptable impact on the amenities of residential properties".

They set down 12 conditions including the closure of the dump by 2025 and an environmental monitoring committee to include two local politicians and two residents.

A waste licence from the Environmental Protection Agency is required before work can begin.

Opponents say the site will pollute the local water supply and that the traffic generated will turn a rural area into a "quasi-industrial zone".

But An Bord Pleanala found there would not be "significant adverse effects on the environment" and would "be acceptable in terms of traffic safety".

The council said the dump was part of an overall waste-management strategy that included extensive recycling facilities.
