A fire early this morning in South Tipperary General Hospital in Clonmel caused the evacuation of a hospital ward.

It is the second fire in the hospital in the past 24 hours.

A porter noticed a bed ablaze in a single room in Medical Ward 3 at 2.45am and removed a nearby patient to safety.

Some 22 other patients were also moved to another part of the hospital.

The area has been sealed off for a Garda technical examination.

Yesterday,  part of the main building was evacuated at 4.15am after a small fire was discovered in an ancillary facility in the same ward.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) said in a statement this morning additional security had been brought into the hospital while the Garda investigation was continuing.
