Washington - President Clinton formally asked the US Senate to approve the admission of Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary into NATO, saying their entry would launch a new era of security in Europe.

At a State Department ceremony attended by the foreign ministers of the three countries, Mr Clinton asserted that the new entrants will make the defence alliance stronger and advance US national interests.
