Martha's Vineyard - President Clinton has nominated the former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mr Thomas Foley, as the US ambassador to Japan, and the former State Department spokesman, Mr Nicholas Burns, as ambassador to Greece. The nominations require Senate confirmation.

Mr Foley, a Washington state Democrat, was House speaker until he lost his seat when the Democrats lost control of Congress to Republicans in 1994.
