The body of a 59-year-old hiker has been recovered from Glenacolly Mountain in Connemara.

The dead man, named as P.J Fox from Carnmore in Co Galway, was hiking with his two brothers yesterday in an area known locally as Devil’s Mother, when he fell to his death.

The two brothers trekked across the mountain to a public roadway for more than an hour where they raised the alarm.

Mr Fox’s body was recovered by members of Mayo Mountain Rescue this afternoon and brought to Mayo General Hospital.

A Coastguard helicopter had pinpointed the location of the body this morning, but it could not be removed due to weather conditions.
