London - They may or may not be able to resist temptation, but some senior Church of England clerics are resisting a proposal to take the word out of the Lord's Prayer. The churchmen have broken ranks with a church commission proposal to delete the words, "Lead us not into temptation", and substitute, "Save us from the time of trial", in a new, modern version of the prayer. If the proposal is approved at a general synod next week, the prayer could be used in services starting in the year 2000.
