Clerical comedy

Almost every Irish comedian popped up at one time or another in a cameo role in Father Ted, with the result that some bright spark had the idea a while back of staging a "Stars from Father Ted" comedy night. Perhaps the best remembered cameo was that by Joe Rooney who memorably played the cheeky young guttersnipe of a trainee priest Father Damo ("Who do you prefer, Blur or Oasis?"). Yet another Navan man (where will it all end?), Rooney started off in comedy a good 10 years back as part of the best double act to never become famous, The Quacksquad. Now out on his own, Rooney excels in decidedly off-kilter stand-up, combining surreal images of his rural upbringing with some pithy observations on contemporary life - and his Michael Flately-esque encore is a real crowd pleaser. He's joined tonight in The Laughter Lounge at Eden Quay by Patrick McDonnell (who played the penis-less country 'n' Irish singer Eoin Love), John Henderson and Brendan Dempsey.
