A 32-year-old garda has been charged with interfering with a witness before a special sitting of Limerick District Court this afternoon.

Garda Patrick Keating from Woodlawns, Ennis, Co Clare was arrested shortly before midday today after gardai received a call from a woman alleging he had threatened her.

Supt John Kerin told the court that the woman, who made the call in the early hours of the morning, inferred that "her life was in danger".

Garda Keating, who was suspended from duties at Shannon Garda Station today was charged with threatening or menacing a witness with the intention of obstructing or perverting the course of justice.

He made no reply to the charge when cautioned at Ennis Garda Station, the court heard.

Supt Kerin said he would not be opposing bail provided "strict" bail conditions were applied.

Judge Leo Malone granted bail on a €900 surety and ordered the accused not to make contact with six named witness in the public order hearing. A list of the witnesses names was handed into the court.

Garda Keating is due to appear at Shannon District Court on September 9th in relation to the public order offence.
