COLOMBO - President Chandrika Kumaratunga yesterday extended emergency rule across Sri Lanka, triggering angry reactions from the opposition which criticised the move as a bid to postpone crucial local elections.

Ms Kumaratunga stunned some of her own cabinet ministers by imposing the emergency regulations to curtail civil liberties and give wide powers to security forces.
