Cityjet has announced plans to acquire 23 Avro RJ85 aircraft in a €174 million deal to expand its fleet.

The introduction of the new aircraft at Cityjet, Air France's Dublin-based subsidiary, will begin in November.

The company says the new aircraft, which are specifically designed to perform on shorter runways, will deliver substantial savings on maintenance costs.

Each aircraft will be named after one of the many islands off the Irish coast, focusing on those that have particularly strong cultural, historical or natural attractions.

Based in Swords, Co Dublin, and employing 580 staff, Cityjet's core operation is high-frequency business and connecting flights on key routes such as Dublin - Paris Charles de Gaulle and Dublin-London City.

Last year the airline carried 1.5 million passengers, with a turnover of €254 million, an increase of 18 per cent on the previous year.
