Customs officers in Rosslare seized 1.28 million cigarettes with a retail value of just under £200,000 yesterday. The smuggled cigarettes were concealed in a 40ft refrigerated container which arrived from Cherbourg. The container had originated in Spain and was carrying frozen lamb, intended for the Border counties. The cigarettes are believed to have been destined for Northern Ireland. The container and its cab, valued at £500,000 in total, were also seized.

A 34-year-old Down man has been detained for questioning in connection with the seizure.
