London - Winston Churchill authorised millions of pounds in bribes to keep Spain out of the second World War, according to papers discovered by a british historian.

Mr David Stafford said the British wartime leader approved payments of £2.5 million pounds to advisers and army commanders of the fascist leader, Gen Franco, to sway them against supporting a Spanish alliance with Nazi Germany.
