Rome - The Catholic Church attacked World Gay Pride celebrations in Rome yesterday, ordering a bishop not to attend a homosexual forum on religion and condemning what a senior theologian dubbed "gay ideology".

Bishop Jacques Gaillot of France said Pope John Paul had ordered him to drop plans to address the meeting today. The bishop obeyed but said the church "must be where it is needed; homosexuals have suffered countless discriminations".
