Gardai are investigating the death of a two-year-old girl on board a US-bound Lufthansa plane that was diverted to Shannon Airport this afternoon.

The flight was travelling via Frankfurt to New York from Addis Ababa at about 2.30 pm when the captain sought permission to divert the flight.

Medical services were on standby when the plane landed, but the child was pronounced dead at the airport.

It is understood the state pathologist was called to the scene and gardaí have interviewed passengers. The plane remains grounded while gardaí conduct their investigation, but is expected to get underway this evening. Gardai are not treating the death as suspicious.
