Kiev - The Ukrainian government yesterday approved the closure of the crippled Chernobyl nuclear power station before the end of the year, an official said.

Ukraine pledged in 1995 to shut down Chernobyl by the end of 2000 after reaching a funding deal with the Group of Seven leading industrial nations. However, the agreement fell through after G7 governments failed to come up with funds to ensure Kiev's energy needs.
