Stolen Southern Health Board cheques and drugs were found when gardai raided the home of a man who has been jailed for two years by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Garda Aiden O'Connell said he was given confidential information that 100 stolen health board cheques had been received by Jerry Crean.

Crean told gardai there was nothing else in the flat but a further search uncovered "speed" and cannabis. Each had a street value of about £2,500.

Crean (42), of Ardbhaile, Mayfield, Cork, admitted handling the stolen cheques and having the drugs for sale or supply on October 19th, 1994.

Judge Gerard Buchanan said he accepted that Crean had claimed he was holding the cheques and drugs for another person, but he was an important link in the drug distribution chain. His guilty plea saved the State a lot of money.
