STRASBOURG - A Chechen rebel leader, Mr Ruslan Shimayev, the foreign minister of the rebel leadership, yesterday urged the international community to recognise an independent Chechnya saying it would help end for good its conflict with Russia.

Six Russian interior ministry soldiers were killed yesterday after their armoured personnel carrier hit a mine in Dagestan, an ethnic Russian region neighbouring Chechnya, Itar-Tass news agency said.
