The first national "scrap gold" fund-raising campaign in the State will start tomorrow at the St Vincent de Paul head office on the New Cabra Road, Dublin, at noon.

The organisers of the event, which aims to raise money for the charity's activities, are asking people with old chains, watches or rings to donate them to the society. All the scrap donated will be smelted down and the value determined by jewellers, who will refund the cash to the SVP.

The actress Pauline McLynn, star of Father Ted, will help open the campaign when she appears in full fairy costume as "the Good Fairy" who turns gold into hard cash.
