German police are investigating a suspicious envelope sent to Deutsche Bank today and addressed to Josef Ackermann, chief executive of Germany's biggest bank, a police spokesman in Frankfurt said.

"There was a piece of mail that arrived at Deutsche Bank that was noticed," said the spokesman, Alexander Kiessling.

He said Frankfurt police were investigating who had sent the envelope, and state police were examining the envelope.

A spokesman for Deutsche Bank in New York declined to comment.

After receiving reports about the package, the New York Police Department stepped up security around Deutsche Bank's offices in New York and also notified corporate security executives around the city, the law enforcement official said.

The official said the suspected bomb carried a return address from the European Central Bank, which is also headquartered in Frankfurt.
