Traditional cement production has cost the State €605 million in the last 10 years, according to a study of European Environment Agency data by Green cement producer Ecocem.

Ecocem looked at Environment Agency data for the health costs of Sulphur dioxide (SO2), Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM10) produced in traditional cement, as well as carbon emissions.

It also looked at cement production figures between 2003 and 2012. A spokesman for Ecocem said the Government has an opportunity in its green procurement plan to promote “green cement”.
