Warsaw - Poland's highest-ranking Catholic official yesterday deplored Jewish unwillingness to compromise on the cross-planting controversy inside the former Nazi death camp at Auschwitz.

It was sad, said Cardinal Jozef Glemp, that "the nation that once prospered and might have progressed better than the rest after being subjected to a horrible massacre, cannot today find words of understanding and compromise."
