Edinburgh - A Scottish Catholic cardinal yesterday tried to defuse growing controversy over his remarks against homosexuality by hitting out at the media and apologising for any offence caused to gays. Cardinal Thomas Winning said a controversial speech he delivered in Malta at the weekend had been misrepresented. He had said Malta's Christian way of life was under threat from a "militant" European homosexual lobby.
