A man was attacked with a sword today in Belfast as he tried to recover his stolen car.

The vehicle, a Nissan Primera, had been taken during a burglary at Closnamona Court in west Belfast.

But after the owner and a friend located it at Dungloe Crescent, they were targeted by a man in his twenties trying to break in.

He was armed with a sword and shattered the Primera's window, police said. At this stage both men ran to a second car parked nearby and got in.

The attacker then smashed its window in an attempt to stab the pair. One of them sustained a facial injury before their attacker ran off.
