An EU directive which requires the Government to introduce a scheme to handle scrap cars in an environmentally-friendly manner has been welcomed by the Irish Motor Vehicle Recyclers' Association.

According to the association, the directive will solve the problem of abandoned cars by requiring the vehicle's last owner to obtain a certificate of destruction from an authorised recycler. Under the terms of the directive, the last owner may deliver the vehicle to a dismantling centre free of charge.
