A PSNI officer suffered leg injuries when he was run over by a car in south Belfast early this morning.

Officers were responding to reports of a burglary in the Ormeau Road area at 3.45 a.m. when they noticed a Renault Clio acting suspiciously, a spokesman said.

Two officers walked over to the car but the driver accelerated and ran over one of them. It then hit a police car and sped off toward the city centre and was last seen on the Falls Road heading west.

The officer was taken to hospital but later released.
