Dublin motorists are five times more likely to have their cars broken into as those outside the city, according to Guardian Direct Insurance.
Encouraging motorists to use anti theft devices, the firm said 70 per cent of break ins happen at night and outside the home, and thieves are as likely to target a cheap car as an expensive one.
