Southern African Development Community (SADC) troops in Lesotho have "secured all objectives", including the Makonyane military base, a South African National Defence Force spokeswoman told AFP yesterday.
"You could call the situation stable," Lieut Col Laverne Machine said. She added that eight South Africans were confirmed dead and 17 wounded in skirmishes with "dissident" Lesotho soldiers. Unconfirmed reports have put the entire death toll at about 40.
Lieut Col Machine said the troops would now concentrate on establishing a joint operations centre in Maseru.
