Ottawa - The charismatic right-wing politician, Mr Stockwell Day, elected leader of Canada's official opposition party at the weekend, yesterday met top aides near Ottawa to map out a strategy for defeating the veteran Prime Minister, Mr Jean Chretien's ruling Liberals.

Mr Day's crushing victory in the race to become leader of the pro-life, flat-tax, tough-on-crime Canadian Alliance looks likely to shake Canadian politics out of its current torpor.
