The Government and For bairt must act to increase pig-slaughtering capacity if existing plants cannot handle the volume of animals reaching the factories, the IFA has said. There had been delays in getting animals into plants because of a fire at the Lovell and Christmas plant at Ballymoney, Co Antrim, in June, Mr Liam Ryan, chairman of the IFA's National Pigs and Pigmeat Committee, said.
