One of Ireland's oldest annual traditional fairs, at Muff, near Kingscourt, Co Cavan, took place yesterday with the largest attendance recorded in recent years. There was a huge showing of horses and ponies, with a brisk demand by buyers, many of whom were from the North.

Some record prices were recorded during the traditional hand-slapping roadside deals, with one prize four-year-old Connemara pony, belonging to a Co Meath breeder, fetching €1,100.

Muff Fair dates back to the 12th century and is held each year on August 12th, but when the 12th falls on a Sunday it is held on the following day.
