Washington - The gap between the favoured Republican and Democratic presidential candidates has never been so small, according to results of a poll published yesterday by the Washington Post and ABC television.

The Republican Governor of Texas, Mr George Bush, is only four percentage points ahead of the Democratic Vice-President, Mr Al Gore, with 49 per cent to Mr Gore's 45, the poll shows. In December, Mr Bush was ahead by 16 points.
