TWO elderly brothers who died at their home near Kilkenny on Sunday night are believed to have been killed by fumes from anthracite they were burning in a range.

Mr Thomas Kennedy (76) and Mr Oliver Kennedy (75) were discovered by their nephew.

The men lived at Firhouse about two miles from the city.

The National Safety Council yesterday warned householders to install smoke alarms and to check batteries every week.

A spokesman said that he would not comment on the deaths of the brothers because he did not have details.

However, he said it was essential that household ventilation be adequate and unblocked. Smoke alarms could detect fumes and should be checked weekly.
