Brokers sue firm of solicitors for €17m

A firm of insurance brokers is claiming €17.6 million damages against a firm of solicitors in Cork over alleged negligence.

A firm of insurance brokers is claiming €17.6 million damages against a firm of solicitors in Cork over alleged negligence.

The partners and solicitors in the firm – Coakley Moloney Solicitors, South Mall, Cork – deny the claims.

Emerald Isle Assurances and Investments Limited, of Togher, Cork, and its two directors, Timothy Maverley and James Morey, have brought the proceedings arising from the handling of other proceedings arising from the termination in 1994 of its contract with Hibernian Life Ltd.

The defendants deny the claims and plead difficulties first arose in the relationship between Emerald and Hibernian in 1992 with the relationship becoming progressively more difficult during 1993 and 1994.
