British insurance intermediary Hill House Hammond is to close with the loss of up to 1,600 jobs, owner Norwich Union said today.

There will be 1,200 redundancies, although another 400 people are likely to be redeployed to other Norwich Union operations.

The Bristol-based operation, which has 230 branches in England, Scotland and Wales, sells mainly personal insurance - such as car and home - on behalf of other insurers.
