British embassy staff may strike

Staff at the British embassy in Dublin will meet today to discuss a planned strike over job cuts.

Around 40 workers are expected to attend the meeting at the offices of the Unite trade union to discuss industrial action after three Irish employees were warned they may be issued with compulsory redundancy notices.

Unite have sent a letter to Ambassador David Reddaway warning that if the jobs are cut, staff will walk out with employees threatening to picket the Ballsbridge offices.

If the strike goes ahead the embassy may have to close.

The three Irish workers have a total of 20 years' service between them and deal with UK trade and investment matters in Ireland.

The Dublin embassy is the only British consular office outside the United Kingdom that recognises trade union membership, and the job cuts are part of wider restructuring plans.
