A British diplomat has been found dead in Jamaica and police are investigating the circumstances, Britain's Foreign Office said today.

The body of honorary consul John Terry was found outside his home near the tourist resort of Montego Bay yesterday, local media reports said.

The 65-year-old was found with a cord and a piece of clothing tied around his neck and he appeared to have been beaten, website of The Gleanerdaily newspaper said.

"We can confirm the death of the British honorary consul in Montego Bay," said a Foreign Office spokesman.

"The Jamaican police are investigating the circumstances and we are in close touch with them."

Mr Terry had worked in the tourism sector for about 30 years, The Gleanersaid.
