LONDON - The fast food chain Wimpy offered a glimmer of hope for embattled ministers last night as they came under renewed attack for their handling of the beef crisis.

Wimpy's announcement that British beef was back on the menu at its 272 restaurants was the first sign that government measures to allay fears over BSE were beginning to pay dividends.
