LONDON - Britain was urged yesterday to play an active role in the search for peace in Cyprus at a time when Aegean tensions and the divided island's hopes of joining the EU have revived international interest.

President Glafkos Clerides met the British Prime Minister, Mr John Major, in Downing Street after flying in from Washington with a commitment from President Clinton to send a new US emissary to the region.
