Rio De Janeiro - A retired Brazilian farmer locked his nine children in a room and stabbed five of them to death after his wife walked out on him, the Jornal do Brasil daily said yesterday.

After a heated argument when she accused her husband, Mr Antonio Dandas Brito, of being an alcoholic, the wife ran out of the house to fetch help from police in Cristinapolis, a small town in the remote northern Brazilian state of Sergipe.
