THE Order of the Rio Branco is to be conferred on the former GATT director general, Mr Peter Sutherland, by the Brazilian government at a ceremony in Brazil on Friday.
Mr Sutherland, who is also a former EU Commissioner, is being decorated for his services to Brazil and developing countries generally. During the Uruguay Round of world trade talks he helped overcome difficulties regarding South American interests which threatened a breakdown in the negotiations.
