An 11-year-old boy, brain-damaged following a car accident three years ago, is to receive £1.1 million under a settlement approved by Mr Justice Johnson in the High Court yesterday.

Michael Joseph Crean, suing by his mother, Ms Eileen Crean, of Avoca House, Keel, Castlemaine, Co Kerry, brought an action against Ms Eileen Murphy of Shanakeale, Castlemaine, and Ms Margaret O'Leary, Dromhall Park, Killarney.

The boy, it was claimed, was injured on April 8th, 1993, when he was cycling near Tubber, Castlemaine, and was struck by a car driven by Ms Murphy and owned by Ms O'Leary.

The statement of claim alleged that as a result of the accident the boy was rendered unconscious and would remain in a vegetative state for the rest of his days.
