A 16-year-old homeless boy was yesterday charged in connection with a car crash that cost the lives of two teenage friends in west Clare last weekend.

The boy was charged at Ennis District Court with dangerous driving, driving without insurance and without a driving licence at Moyarta, Carrigaholt, on October 17th.

Insp Kevin Moynihan told the juvenile court that further serious charges arising from the incident are expected to follow.

The crash claimed the lives of friends and neighbours Ms Stacy Haugh (16) and Ms Lorna O'Mahony (13), and injured Stacy's younger brother, Karl (11), who remains in care at Our Lady's Children's Hospital in Dublin.

Garda Niall Naughton told the court the boy made no reply when the charges were read to him.

Ms Valerie Corcoran, for the accused, told the court the boy was unemployed.

He was granted legal aid. Ms Corcoran applied for bail for the boy.

However, Insp Moynihan said gardaí were seeking a remand in custody. He said further, more serious charges were expected and there was a chance the boy would not stay around to stand trial.

Judge Joseph Mangan remanded the boy to St Patrick's Institution, to appear at Kilkee District Court next Tuesday.
