A four-year-old boy is in a serious condition at Waterford Regional Hospital after a car crash near Mooncoin, Co Kilkenny, in which a mother of five children died.

Ms Marie Purcell, of Ferrybank, Waterford, was a back-seat passenger in the car which veered off the road, crashed through a ditch and struck a concrete pier about 8.15 p.m. on Sunday.

Ms Purcell's three daughters and her son, and the driver of the car, a neighbour from Ferrybank, had minor injuries.
